Humorous Quotations
Issue #64
October 04, 2003
Hi Friends,
"I do not mind lying, but I hate inaccuracy."
Ironically, my page which carried that quote was full
of inaccuracies. It was so inaccurate that it had
attributed the quote to the wrong Samuel Butler.
It used to read, before I corrected it yesterday,
Samuel Butler - English Poet, 1612-1680.
Well, there WAS a Samuel Butler who was poet in
the 17th century, but most quotes attributed to
Samuel Butler on the net (and most of the ones in
this issue) are not his but of the 19th century Satirist.
This week we visit both the Samuel Butlers...
"Any fool can tell the truth, but it requires a man
of some sense to know how to lie well."
"The advantage of doing one's praising for oneself is that
one can lay it on so thick and exactly in the right places."

his 19th Century secret sharer, who wrote Erewhon and
